Freelance UX/UI designer for websites and web apps

Updated

A UX/UI designer shapes how a website or web application works and looks, so users can reach their goal without friction. I'm Ruben Bijker, a freelance UX/UI designer and developer in Amsterdam. I design flows, interfaces and design systems in Figma, and I can build them too.

What I design

  • User flows and structure. What users want to do, and the shortest clear path to it.
  • Interfaces. Layouts, typography, colour and components for marketing sites and web applications. Recent Figma-based work includes Altura and Carv.
  • Design systems. Tokens, components and type that stay consistent as the product grows.
  • Reviews of existing products. A practical list of what to fix first, ordered by impact.

Why design and development together

Handoff is where most designs lose quality. When the person who draws the interface also knows what is cheap or expensive to build, the design is realistic from the first sketch and the result matches the mockup. It also shortens the project: no translation step, no rounds of clarification between roles.

How a design project works

  1. Understand the goal. Who the users are, what they need to do and how success is measured.
  2. Sketch flows and wireframes. Quick, cheap, easy to change.
  3. Design the interface in Figma. Real content, real components, desktop and mobile.
  4. Test and refine. With real users or your team, before development starts.
  5. Build or hand off. I either build it in Next.js, Svelte or Webflow, or deliver production-ready Figma files and a design system for your team.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a UX designer and a UI designer?
UX design decides how a product works: structure, flows and what users can do. UI design decides how it looks and feels: layout, typography, colour and components. For most web projects you need both, and they are best done together.
Do you design in Figma?
Yes. I design in Figma and can also work in your existing Figma files and component libraries.
Can you also build the design?
Yes, and this is the main advantage. Because I design and develop, nothing gets lost in handoff: the interface is drawn with the real constraints of the code in mind, and then built as drawn.
What is a design system and do I need one?
A design system is a set of tokens, components and rules that keep a product consistent as it grows. If your product has more than a few screens or more than one person working on it, a lightweight design system saves time and avoids inconsistency.
Can you improve an existing website or app without a full redesign?
Yes. A focused review of key flows often finds the changes that matter most. I can fix those first and leave the rest of the interface alone.
